I have delayed too long before committing these memories to paperfor my sons and their children, if nobody else.
Now that I know the complete truth about l’affaire Nordhall, as much as it can ever be known, I have retirednot to notre grande maison in the Marais, but to Maison Troisroses in the seclusion of Provençeto compile my notes and quotes, and create what permanent record I might. I owe at least that much to my sons and their posterity.
More selfishly, I owe at least as much to myself, since the circle of my life is inscribed within the story of my father, his women, and his war with Josef Stalin over the atomic bomb.
