Scene 24. Message for Mr. Gray

Doctor Night or Orbital Sniper, a Tomorrow Thriller by John T. CullenIn the air above Virginia, the white U.S. Navy Gulfstream G280 executive jet with black markings descended for a landing at Reagan International Airport in Washington, D.C.

Rector took a call on the cabin phone system, which tied in to the cockpit communications systems. "Yes," he said. As he listened, his eyebrows rose way up.

Claire and Jack watched with mystified fascination as Rector listened to a phone message.

"Thanks," Rector said after about two minutes. He rang off. "Oh dear God in heaven."

"What is it?" Claire asked.

"That was about Ribeye." Rector looked a bit sick around the gills. "Poor kid. I just learned that Black Umbrella is highly creative indeed. Jack, you're going to need to fly to Frankfurt, and work your way back from the crocodile cage at the Frankfurt Zoo."

"They fed him to the reptiles?" Jack said.

Claire looked pale.

"Yes. He called me from Kaiserslautern the night before, so this all went down very fast. Let's see…" he searched on the computer "…the A6 Autobahn runs between K-town and Frankfurt, a straight shot of about sixty miles, or 100 klicks. The body was still fresh as a pile of hamburger an hour ago. The zoo keepers found his wallet, and my blind contact number. Langley forwarded the Frankfurt Police chief's call to me—he speaks great English, and left me a detailed message, which Langley was kind enough to forward. That's what I just heard.”

Claire observed: "Usually when something like this gets done, the doers are sending someone a message."

"I get it," Jack said. "Message received."
