58. CAFÉ MACHO I

man of great deeds, o violent life!
He sees his story as one of drink and smoke:
precipitous, with red nights and lightning days;
painful encounters with careless or impulsive women;
friends with guns — he is of battlements,
     sailing ships, and cannonades!
Women (when they see him lingering
          with his Marlboro
          over an expensive drink)
think: there
sits a gentle and unsuccessful man.

Amazon e-book page Thank you for reading. If you love it, tell your friends. Please post a favorable review at Amazon, Good Reads, and other online resources. If you want to thank the author, you may also buy a copy for the low price of a cup of coffee. It's called Read-a-Latte: similar (or lower) price as a latte at your favorite coffeeshop, but the book lasts forever while the beverage is quickly gone. Thank you (JTC). PS: I wrote most of these poems (except the title poem, October Leaf) as a teenager, so I published them under the pseudonym A. T. Nager.
